Life is falling to pieces: an illustrated journal

Life tends to suck if you let it. An illustrated journal about the way I've totally screwed up my life and (hopefully) how I'm going to get myself out of it.

Hello Serena,

It happens to the best of us. I missed a whole day of lectures once just because I wanted to play some stupid video game that morning. And it is hard to skip medical school lectures and get away with it. The important thing is that it not become a habit, so the guilt you are feeling is actually a good thing.

So here's some encouragement and a hope that tomorrow is a better day.

Missing class is something that's unavoidable and usually perfect attendance isn't that helpful in college. It's best to be honest with your parents about missing class, though I usually do not follow this advice myself.

Hiding is not the answer! If you're going to lie, lie from the start!

Wow! I am much worse!

ha, see my problem is: been there, done that.

i know perfectly well that nobody at school is going to care if i miss a class and honestly i really didn't miss all that much. its just that when this becomes a highly repeatable habit and lethargy or whatever get the best out of you constantly, you kinda lose your ability to keep up and/or run out of time to make up the bulk of the school work.

its more of a challenge to myself to stay on target. i've already been down this road and its really easy to slip back into bad habits.

honestly with the parents? a nobel goal, but highly unlikely with my secretive, compulsive liar, keep-everyone-on-the-outside-thinking-that-there's-nothing-wrong mentality. i am a sneaky monkey. the characteristics of my chinese zodiac hit me hard. :P

Ah who needs class! I slept through my first class last semester almost everyday and I still managed to pass (barely of course). Its more about forcing yourself to do things though. I have trouble with that to, trust me.

Serena,

Don't beat yourself up too much, it happens. We all have off days.... and we all deserve to have a day off now and then.

Just remember you have a goal to keep in mind and can't make a habit of skipping if you want to achieve it.

Best of luck!

I'm new here. I like how you do what you do - mixing analog images in the digital format. It's clever and interesting. Just thought I'd leave a fingerprint.

Hey, you'll get through those days...we all have to miss a class once in a while. you just have to keep yourself in check...which it sounds like you did. i'm sure you'll be fine.

in other news, i'm going away for a week w/o a computer and i was wondering if for that week, you wouldn't mind my copying your idea of scanning my written journal. i'd obviously give you full credit for the idea and post many links to your site. and then obviously go back to the reg. way of blogging after my return. also, i can't draw, so it won't look as cool as yours. :) let me know, and if you don't want me to, i won't. just thought it's such a cool idea.

have a good day and good luck!

I totally understand what you mean... the sinkhole of doom is different for everyone. I'm past college, but leaving the house is SO hard sometimes, and when every cell in your body is clutching the brakes, it makes it feel impossible to step on the gas.

For me, taking it down to baby steps when it gets like that is imperative.
1. realizing I'm slipping, feeling the need to hide
2. pare down all "to-dos" to what must be done
3. tell someone important and reliable that I'm slipping, maybe they can help
4. realize that sometimes all this won't work and I just need to sleep it off and try to use my energy to make sure tomorrow works out better.

I don't know if that helps- I hope so.

You know something? I've been out of school for 15 years, and I still dream about skipping/missing classes. My guilt is here to stay. The good news- I did eventually graduate! Keep your wonderful journal going!
